Bioceramic Filtering
Each alkaline filter cartridge will last for approximately 350+ litres of filtered water before requiring replacement. Typically two months of average use. The filtered water can be used for hot and cold drinks, cooking, and washing vegetables and fruit.
Composition of the Alkaline Jug Filters:
- Coarse particle pre-filter stops visible particles from entering the filter bed.
- Fine polypropylene mesh pre-filter prevents any small particles or sediment from entering into the filter media and leading to clogging.
- Activated carbon granules absorb chlorine and organic compounds such as benzene (if present in your water)
- Antioxidant balls decrease the Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP). Typical tap water in the UK has an ORP of 300mV. After passing through the filter cartridge, this will generally change to -100 to -200mV. The pH of the water will typically rise from a pH of 7.5 (which is fairly standard for UK tap water or bottled water) to between 9.0 and 9.5.
- Far Infra Red ceramic balls contain different types of natural minerals such as tourmaline which are known to emit far infrared energy.
- Antibacterial ceramic balls prevent the growth of bacteria in the filter cartridge. They also help to uptake harmful heavy metals in the water.
- Final polypropylene filtration stops any fine particulate from coming through the filter.
- Each alkaline filter cartridge will last for approx 6 to 8 weeks (350+ litres of filtered water) before requiring replacement. If there are high levels of hardness, then the cartridges may require replacement more frequently.
The Biocera Alkaline Jug is now an extremely effective way for everyone to enjoy the benefits of drinking filtered alkaline water.
The Alkaline Jug Filter Functions Very Differently from Standard Jug Filters
The Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter is similar in appearance to most commonly used jug filters, but in operation it is entirely different.
If you filter tap water through an ordinary jug filter, the water after filtration will typically have a pH of 5.5 (acidic). They are designed to filter out dissolved contaminants and remove hardness.
When you filter the water through the alkaline jug filter, however, the pH will typically be in the order of 9.0 to 9.5 (alkaline). The Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) of the water will also be beneficially changed.
With tap water in the UK, that is usually in the order of 150 to 300mV (with little change after ordinary filtration).
After passing through the alkaline jug filter, this typically changes to between -100mV and -200mV, which is what gives the water antioxidant properties.
We believe that drinking alkaline water, such as provided by the Biocera Alkaline Jug, is probably the simplest thing we can all do to achieve better levels of wellness.
Now with the alkaline jug filter it's possible for everyone to have the convenience and health benefits of alkaline water. We introduced the Biocera Alkaline Jug to the UK in 2009, and since then we have received plenty of positive feedback from our customers.

Q: What's the difference between the Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter cartridges and ordinary jug filter cartridges?
A: Ordinary filter cartridges are designed to remove pollutants such as chlorine, dissolved organic contaminants, heavy metals and hardness from the water. However, they typically leave the water acidic after filtering. The Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter removes chlorine and dissolved organic contaminants, while the special minerals in the cartridge alkalise and ionise the water.
Q. Does the Biocera Alkaline Jug soften the water?
A. No, the Biocera Jug does not soften the water. If ceramics were included to soften the water, then the water would be acidic.
Q. My jug has calcium build-up and/or white deposits in the water - is this normal?
A. This is normal, particularly if you live in an area with hard water. The Biocera Jug's prime function is to produce alkaline, antioxidant, structured water. Because it changes the structure of the water, fine calcium particles, which can form scale, precipitate out of the water. If calcium is a problem, you should clean the jug regularly with a 50:50 solution of warm water and vinegar (any vinegar except brown) and a non-abrasive cloth.
Q: What change in pH can I typically expect?
A: If putting tap water into your alkaline jug with a pH of 7.5 (typical for many areas of the country), the pH of the filtered water will typically be in the range of 8.5 to 9.5. This is an ideal pH range to be drinking daily.
Q. The water from my Biocera Jug has a low pH - is the filter faulty?
A. The pH of water should be tested using a pH Meter or pH Test Colour Reagent. PH Test Strips do not give an accurate reading of the pH of water
Q: How frequently do I need to change the filter cartridge?
A: We would recommend that the filter cartridge be changed every eight weeks. You can set the date on the dial at the top of the jug when you install a new cartridge. Standard jug filter cartridges require changing every four weeks due to the possibility of harmful bacteria growing in the filter media. The filter media in the Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter are antibacterial, thereby preventing harmful bacterial growth and extending the cartridge lifetime. Hence they can be changed less frequently than ordinary filter cartridges.
Q. My water still has a high pH reading after eight weeks, so why do I have to change the filter?
A. The ph may well still be high after eight weeks, but the filter has several elements, only one of which is raising the ph of the water. The filter also filters out chlorine and other impurities from the water; the ability of the filter to do this decreases over time and, after eight weeks, will not be as effective. The filter contains antibacterial media, which again loses its effectiveness over time. After eight weeks of use, there is a chance of bacteria building up in the filter. The filter has been developed, so it is still performing well at the time of expiry and not just when it is new.
Q. Does the Biocera Alkaline Jug filter out fluoride?
A. No, the Biocera jug filters out chlorine but not flouride. Not all water companies in the UK add flouride to the water, you can check with you local water company. To filter out flouride you may like to consider our Energy Plus under-sink Filter which filters out >92% of flouride and has very high levels of filtration of other contaminants.
Q: What safety standards do the Biocera minerals comply with?
A: Biocera have received certification from NSF, the international certification body involved in safety standards, for their bioceramic filter media. To our knowledge they are the only company to have received this certification for their bioceramic minerals.
Q: Do the Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter cartridges fit other jugs?
A: The Biocera Jug Filter cartridges will fit most jug filters that take the round-type filter cartridges commonly sold in supermarkets.
Q: What is the Biocera Alkaline Jug made from?
A: The Biocera Alkaline Jug is manufactured from plastics where the resins used are BPA-free.
Q: Can I produce alkaline ionised water on tap similar to the water from the Biocera Alkaline Jug Filter?
A: Yes, it is now possible to enjoy similar quality water 'on tap' using the Energy Plus Water Filter. The Energy Plus inline system is a four-stage filtration system which uses Biocera bioceramic minerals to alkalise and ionise the water. Further details can be found here.
Q: Can the used filter cartridges be recycled?
A: Yes. The contents of the used filters can be diposed of in your garden (the media will enhance the soil) or in your kitchen/garden waste. The empty outer shell can be put in plastic recycling.
